About the Program

What is Women, Infants & Children?

Women, Infants & Children (WIC) — the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children — is a federal program that provides nutritious foods, nutrition education, breastfeeding support, and referrals to healthcare for eligible families.

The program is administered by your state and funded by the USDA. It's designed to safeguard the health of low-income women, infants, and children up to age 5 who are at nutritional risk.

Who is Eligible?

Women, Infants & Children serves women and children who meet income and nutritional risk guidelines. You may qualify if you fall into one of these groups:

Pregnant Women

Women who are currently pregnant, regardless of how many pregnancies.

Postpartum Women

Women up to 6 months after the end of a pregnancy (including miscarriage or stillbirth).

Breastfeeding Women

Women up to 12 months postpartum who are breastfeeding their infant.

Infants

Children under 1 year of age, including adopted infants.

Children

Children ages 1 through 4 years (up to their 5th birthday).

Income guidelines apply. Households at or below 185% of the federal poverty level are generally eligible. Contact your local Women, Infants & Children office to confirm.
